The poster stamp was an advertising label, a little larger than most postage stamps, that originated in the mid-19th century and became a popular collectable up until WW1 and then declining by WW2. Poster stamps also fall under the category of Cinderella stamps, defined as virtually anything resembling a postage stamp, but not issued for postal purposes by a government postal administration. Those interested in this type of turn of the century denim and workwear manufactured on the west coast including the brands Neustadter Brothers, A.B. Elfelt & Co., Greenebaum Brothers and Eloesser-Heynemann & Co. are encouraged to check out the most excellent book Jeans of the Old West: A History by Michael Harris. Michael is one of, if not the authority on the subject and along with the support of partners in crime Charla & Russ, is currently wrapping up a new book that will focus on workwear from the turn of the century. In addition to being honored to provide a small piece for the project, we here at vintage workwear look forward to this exciting new book and will be sharing more details as they become available.

1920's N.B. Products BOSS OF THE ROAD Ghost Sign Uncovered in San Francisco

Ghost sign for BOSS OF THE ROAD Union Made OVERALLS & WORKSHIRTS recently exposed on 3rd Street in San Francisco's Bayview District during demolition for an expanded neighborhood library. "The sign dates from before 1921, based on San Francisco Assessor's records for the demolished building," reports photographer David Gallagher.

"Here's a 1928 shot of the street from the Jesse Brown Cook Collection at UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library." This billboard would be underneath the "Ed's Shop" sign on the right.

Note the N.B. PRODUCTS flag located on the left, above the bull dog. Original owners Neustadter Brothers would sell the brand to Eloesser-Heynemann who in turn sold the brand to Lee.
